Mercedes SLS AMG Black Series in the Works

Mercedes is currently developing a performance-addicted version of the SLS supercar, with the vehicle expected to hit the market in 2013, as autocar reports.

The machine is expected to use the classic recipe for extreme dynamics: it will come with more power and less weight. It is expected to be marketed as an AMG Black Series vehicle, so it should be a totally different animal from the “standard” SLS, bringing the game to a whole new level.

The SLS AMG Black Series will use a whipped version of the vehicle’s current 6.2 liter powerplant, “ignoring” the forced induction 5.5 liter V8 which will replace the 6.2 liter naturally aspirated V8 unit on the rest of the upcoming AMG models.

In its current form, the engine offers 563 hp and 479 lb-ft of torque, but in its new form it is expected to exceed 600 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque as it will use modifications like a larger intake manifold, higher compression ratio, high performance camshafts and others.

We’re not at the limit with what’s out there the moment. There’s still a good deal more to come from the engine,” AMG engine boss Friedrich Eichler was quoted as saying by the aforementioned source. “We’re saving the best until last.

The Black Series Gullwing's beefier powerplant, together with it’s diet (it will lose at least 50 kg) should bring it’s 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) sprint time somewhere in the under 3.5 seconds area (the SLS AMG needs 3.8 s to get to 62mph), while raising its top speed by 13 mph(21km/h) to 208 mph(332 km/h).

Of course, all this go-fast drama will come with a hefty price increase, with the Black Series label possibly bringing a premium of up to 50 percent over the SLS’s current value.
