The SLR was a rather special offspring born from the mating of a German auto giant and a British racing team. The front-engined performance GT, sporting carbon-fiber body, was fast and comfortable, making it the last word in cross-continental travel. The final episode of the SLR story was dedicated to a British racing legend, Sir Stirling Moss, and was built in a limited run of just 75 cars.
Sadly, none of the 75 examples if the extreme vehicle were destined to be sold in America, as it was not classified as a street-legal car. However one seems to have arrived Stateside, an is now up for sale in Miami, Florida. According to the ad, this particular SLR Stirling Moss has only 50 miles (80 kilometers) on the clock and comes with a showcar license, so it can be used moderately on US roads.
This silver example is being offered by duPont Registry for the astronomical price of... $1.75 million (€1.3 million), but the owner is open to look at trade-ins. We’re just guessing here, but they probably aren’t thinking of a 2002 Corolla trade-in.
The uncompromising car has no roof, nor a windscreen to protect the driver and passenger from the outside world. Further eye-catching features include two air scoops behind the driver and passenger. The side skirts on the new Mercedes-Benz SLR Stirling Moss are also very high, prompted the designers' decision to favor folding swing-wing doors which open forwards.
The limited-edition model comes with a 5.5-liter supercharged v8 engine that produces 650 horsepower, enough to propel it from 0 to 60 mph (98 km/h) in just 3.5 seconds and on to a top speed of 217 mph (350 km/h).
