The 2013 IAA in Frankfurt will play host to the premier of the replacement for the Mercedes CL, but only as a concept car, German publication Auto Motor und Sport reports today.
The new luxury coupe has been testing for a while now under heavy camouflage and we expect the production model's debut to take place no later than mid-2013. Still, Mercedes' concept cars are always 95% production-ready, meaning we'll have a very good idea of what it will look like right from the start.
The German publication has managed to scoop the new S-Class Coupe interior and discovered something very interesting. The dashboard looks just like that of the S-Class, but the key fob has a tag on it that says "CL 217" on it. This contradicts previous rumors that said Mercedes will drop the CL name to simplify its naming system. W217 would be the next logical code for the CL, since the previous car was called the W216.
Then again, this could be a clever ruse to make sure we don't figure out the name it will carry. The next code after W217 is the aging CLS's W218. That car uses an older generation platform, shared with the outgoing CL, and so it would make a lot more sense to call its replacement C222, after the S-Class.
