Mercedes Recalling Over 136,000 M-Klasse SUVs in the US

Yes, we are going to tell you about another huge recall affecting cars in the US, but this one doesn’t sound as dangerous to the driver as faulty brakes or suspension components that might disintegrate, but it's pretty serious nevertheless.

A cruise control system defect has prompted a huge US recall of 136,751 units of the Mercedes-Benz M-Klasse and M-Klasse AMG SUVs from the 2000 to 2004 model year. In a filing made to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Mercedes-Benz said it has determined that under certain circumstances, use of the brake pedal may not automatically disengage the cruise control system as is normally the case with the such systems.

Mercedes has stated that if the driver pumps the brake instead of applying constant pedal force, the level of force needed to shut off cruise control might get unusually high. The NHTSA says that difficulty or delay in disengaging the cruise control system can increase the risk of crashing.

The German carmaker has stated that M-Klasse owners car will still be able to deactivate the system using the cruise control stalk on the steering wheel.
The oddest fact about this recall is that the affected vehicles won’t get called back before September 2011. Owners of the affected vehicles may contact Mercedes-Benz for more information at 1-800-367-6372.

The Mercedes-Benz M-Klasse is a 4-door SUV with light off-road capability, first offered in 1997, and built in Tuscaloosa County, Alabama. At launch, the M-Class was a technological tour de force. However, owners were often unhappy with the workmanship that had gone into their cars, as it placed last out of 142 cars in the Top Gear Motoring Survey 2004. DaimlerChrysler then spent $600 million on improving the Alabama factory before launching a second generation in 2005.
