After breaking the world record for surfing on the highest wave in the world with the boards Mercedes-Benz specially did for him last year, surfer Garret McNamara is once again joining forces with the german auto maker. The company announced they have been working on two new boards, one of which was recently unveiled.
When Mercedes-Benz becomes a sponsor in sports, they won’t just chose any field of practice. It has to be rare and preferably received as cool. And what is cooler than surfing on 100-foot (30 m) waves off the Portuguese coast?

Mercedes-Benz designers began working together with McNamara on MBoard project 1.0 back in 2013, as it seemed quite successful considering the surfer broke the world record using them. They all have different forms and are tailored to McNamar’s height and weight.

Cork boards

In the current project, the team is looking towards renewable raw material of cork, which has proved its efficiency, durability and stability in numerous other projects, such as aviation and automotive. According to Mercedes-Benz, the construction of the surfboard made use of the experience of the world’s largest cork producer, the Portuguese company Corticeira Amorim.

The decision to opt for a sustainable material seems to be more than obvious, considering he is quite the nature lover and even married to an environmental sciences teacher.

Second board made with aviation materials

However, the second surfboard in question is made from a foam material used mainly in the aviation industry. Its advantage is allegedly the fact that it allows the board to be built without longitudinal reinforcements. The Portuguese company Pole Surfboards is responsible for production off the two boards, named MBoard 2.0 and MBoard 3.0.

Mercedes decided to give the surfing legend further support, becoming this year’s official sponsor of the North Canyon project, which was held from October to November 2014 on Nazare’s north beach. International surfing greats took part in the event to ride the world-famous high waves of the Portuguese city.

Not that we don't enjoy extreme sports, but we can't help but wonder what is the limit for all these weird marketing ventures the luxury car makers go on.
