Mercedes Opposes Third Car Per Team Push by Ferrari

The idea of having three cars per team in the near future of Formula 1 doesn't appeal to all manufacturers in the series, as Ferrari's president Luca di Montezemolo keeps trying to make us believe.

Despite lobbying constantly for a rule changes in that direction, that would allow an F1 team to enter 3 cars in the F1 championship, Montezemolo's struggle doesn't seem to find the right echo with German carmaker Mercedes-Benz. In fact, the marque's motorsport director Norbert Haug made it very clear that he and his company would totally vote against such a prospect in F1.

According to Haug, this type of change would absolutely destroy the small teams in the series, allowing the same contenders to have access to the title fight year after year.

Three cars per team is not something we support,” Haug, who is present in Valencia for the winter testing kick-off, was quoted as saying by f1today.nl.

It would be disastrous for the small teams so we see the current situation as much healthier. If we can avoid having three cars per team, we certainly will do so,” added the German official.

However, running 3 cars per team is not the only solution forwarded by Di Montezemolo for the future. Recently, he told the media that preparing a third Ferrari for an American team like Penske would benefit the sport more than having newly-entrants run GP2-spec machines that finish each race 2 or 3 laps down.

Either way, before the FIA decides anything in that direction, a rule change on this topic has to meet unanimous support within the Formula One Teams Association (FOTA), where all teams are represented, including the small ones.

Translated into English, the 3rd car per team idea is pretty much a long shot anyway, but nobody could blame the Italian for trying to make a difference, right?
