2015 will be a crucial year for both Mercedes-Benz and the SUV industry. That's when the refreshed Cayenne will come out, together with the updated M-Class we just showed in our previous report and this, the ML-Coupe. It's based on the same platform as the ML, but has a sloped rear, just like BMW's X6.
This is Mercedes' first move into the lifestyle vehicle market and it's a very good one. And line any other lifestyle choice, the ML-Coupe is designed with diversity and color in mind. The lines looks sporty and elegant at the same time and the ride will be amongst the smoothest in the business. Initial reports suggested this model will be named the MLC, but they've since been changed. Now, all signs point towards either ML Coupe or M-Class Coupe, depending on the market.
Our latest spy photos show this exiting new arrival to the Sport Activity Coupe market in two different locations, worlds apart from each other. One appears to be the upcoming ML 63 AMG model, maybe even the S-Model version of that, judging by the exhaust system.
Engineers are naturally pushing this hardcore version to the extreme on the Nurburgring track. With an expected 585 hp and 800 Nm (664 lb ft) of torque, a wider track and lowered suspension, we believe the ML 63 AMG Coupe could be the fastest SUV Mercedes has ever made.
The other prototype is undergoing testing in America's Death Valley, one of the hottest places on the face of the planet. Mercedes is hoping this will help them find out if there are any mechanical flaws that can't take this kind of abuse.
This time around, it's not an AMG, most likely not even a normal V8. A brand new twin-turbo V6 with 333 hp and 480 Nm (354 lb ft) of torque will take care of propelling the ML 400 Coupe model.
