Mercedes-Maybach Range Could Expand in the Near Future with E-Class Based Model

The new Mercedes-Maybach brand is actually a revamp of the standalone Maybach name but it seems that Mercedes-Benz has big plans for the luxurious division in the near future. Speaking to AutoNews, Mercedes-Benz USA CEO, Steve Cannon said that a smaller car within the sub-brand could show up in the near future.

At the 2015 Detroit Auto Show we got to see the S-Class-based Maybach, a car that needs no further introduction. It’s longer than the Mercedes it’s based on and offers more luxurious amenities with a price tag to match. But could it be possible to see a car based on the E-Class wearing the double M moniker?

According to Cannon, absolutely: "You will see more from the Maybach brand." Such a model could use the Chinese platform of the long wheelbase E-Class that is quite popular in the communist country.

Furthermore, he’s not the only one making such statements. Dieter Zetsche, CEO of Daimler AG, said that things could go even further, moving into the SUV segment. Since Bentley recently confirmed that they will be making the Bentayga (their SUV model), this would be the perfect alternative to such a proposition.

On top of the Bentley rival, other might soon enter this new ultra-luxurious niche as well. Rumors of a Lamborghini model have been going around for quite some time now and even Rolls-Royce has been linked to a similar move. No official info was provided for now, however.

Smaller A-Class in the works as well

At the same auto show, the officials from Daimler were more than willing to tell us about their future plans. The popular A-Class model was amongst the ones discussed and it would seem that a new version will be released in the near future.

"The A class will change from what you have seen and from what you are used to," Cannon said, mentioning that a smaller front-wheel drive car is being considered right now and it could even make it Stateside (the A-Class hatch is not available in the US at the moment, the CLA being offered instead).

While it might seem like a stretch, such a volume car would indeed help out Mercedes reach the ever so tightening CO2 emission standards demanded by the EU.
