Last year saw BMW barely hold on to its crown in the luxury segment, selling more cars than Mercedes-Benz but only by a small margin. As it turns out, the encouraging prospects of last year turned the Stuttgart-based company into the best seller of January.
A hike of 8.9 percent in sales, that brought the total number of cars sold last month to 24,619 units, is responsible for this performance. Most impressive is that the growth was not necessarily backed by the cheapest offering, the CLA-Class but was spurred on by the GL-Class that saw a 38 percent sales jump.

At the same time, the S-Class also performed incredibly well, selling in 1,566 units, a 22 percent increase from last year. The Mercedes-Benz CEO, Stephen Cannon, said that the product offensive will continue with the introduction of the Mercedes-Maybach S600 and the AMG GT S models, hinting at even higher numbers in the future.

The bigger surprise came from Lexus, however, that jumped one place in the hierarchy and ended up on the second spot, nibbling at Mercedes’ toes. The Japanese sold 31 percent more cars this January than in 2014 and added up to a grand total of 23,131 units on a big surge in demand for the GS sedan that went up by 29 percent.

Other cars were unexpectedly successful as well, such as the GX SUV (25 percent increase) and the NX crossover that sold 2,812 units all by itself.

Last year’s champ, BMW, saw itself fall to third place with 18,981 units sold in January, a small 4 percent increase compared to 2014. Audi is no longer fourth either, being outsold by Acura with 11,982 units compared to the Germans’ 11,541 cars. Cadillac came in fifth with 11,680 automobiles delivered.
