Mercedes Hint They Want a German Driver

Another episode of the Nico Rosberg soap opera consumed itself during the course of this week, as a single statement made by the German driver made the headlines go crazy prior to the Abu Dhabi season finale. The Williams driver did not reveal anything in regards to his 2010 deal, but he did mention that he will aim for race wins next season.

Clearly he won't be able to do what while in a Williams car – although never say never – which led to the suggestion that he will indeed join the Brawn GP lineup in 2010. However, Mercedes motorsport director Norbert Haug yesterday came to throw some more doubts over that projected move, insisting that McLaren Mercedes are going after a German driver for 2010.

If there is the possibility of having a good German driver, then we will,” said Haug, who targeted Rosberg two years ago, following Fernando Alonso's departure from McLaren. However, while still under contract with Frank Williams, the German driver decided to stay at Grove.

Rosberg's move to Brawn GP was the result of the constant rumors suggesting that Mercedes will switch their factory support from Woking to Brackley in approximately 2 years time. The first step in that direction would be purchasing a large part of Brawn GP's shares, which Mercedes seem to eye in the near future. Reportedly, the German manufacturer is to acquire 75 percent of Brawn GP within months.

Returning to the Rosberg story, however, the son of Finnish champion Keke Rosberg seems to be the only German driver able to draw that much attention from Mercedes. There are currently at least 2 more German-native drivers without a commitment for 2010 – Nick Heidfeld and Timo Glock – yet nobody seems to throw them into the McLaren-Brawn-Mercedes mix.

As for the possibility of changing teams at the end of the season, Rosberg admitted it would be an emotional exit from Williams at the Yas Marina Circuit.

If I was to change (teams), it would be a difficult situation in Abu Dhabi. I get along superbly with everyone in the (Williams) team, and during my time there were no large personnel changes,” admitted the German driver.
