Mercedes' GLK in China

Mercedes Benz chose the China Auto Show 2008 for the world premiere of the long awaited competitor on the newly born CUV segment, called GLK.

The new GLK comes as an addition to the offer of the German producer, not only on the Asian market but also worldwide. Based on the platform of the C Klasse, the new CUV is focused on three main directions: striking design, compact dimensions and low fuel consumption.

Powered at launch by a  2.2 liter diesel engine featuring BlueEFFICIENCY, the entry level GLK 220 CDI  develops 170 horsepower, with a fuel consumption of just 6.9 liters per 100 kilometers.

The compact SUV also showcases Agility COntrol suspension, variable 4MATIC four-wheel drive, PRE SAFE  system and Intelligent Light System (ILS). A petrol engine is expected to be added to the rang just after the launch, along with another diesel one (most probably called 320 CDI).

The  Asian Show wasn't chosen by accident for this launch. First of all because this is where the competition just presented the main rival, the Audi Q5, and because China is a very important market for Mercedes, as the German company registers important sales figures on this developing territory, with a 53 percent raise las year alone.

As an addition to the launch, the Mercedes officials also invited actress Zhang Ziyi (local actress well known from movies such as Memoirs of a geisha and Mulan) in order to make sure they appeal to even more customers.
