Oh Mercedes, how you like to make things complicated. What was supposed to be a simplification of the naming scheme has made things even worse. Take the Mercedes-Benz GLE450 AMG Coupe, worth $66,000. It's supposed to have the AMG at the beginning yet it doesn't, plus the name is meant to be 43 AMG. Not that it features a 4.3 or 4.5-liter engine, as this is one of those new V6 AMG models.
Despite all these niggles and the fact that it's got taillights shamefully copied from the S-Class Coupe, we like the big sports truck. Not only does it give you an alternative to the BMW X6, but you can also have it with a twin-turbo engine without having to order the thirsty V8s. We think it's an awesome alternative to the Cayenne S.
Twin-turbo engines have really spoiled us to the point where the old 3.5-liter V6 engines seem outdated. The numbers pretty much speak for themselves. While the GLE 450 AMG Coupe takes 5.7 seconds to reach 62 mph, the ML 350 that was on sale last year took 7.6 seconds.
It's been less than a week since we presented a white GLE 63 S with the Topcar Inferno tuning kit. But now, we have another contender equipped with the V6 engine and a nice red paintjob.
There are some cosmetic differences, but you need to know where to look. For example, the grille is chromed and probably not a tuning feature. The same barrage of custom parts is used, including the fender flares and side skirts. But instead of using carbon fiber, this package is made from regular plastic that's painted gloss black.
The wheels, brakes, and exhaust are Mercedes original parts. We also wish they would have given us another one of those amazing crocodile leather interiors. But considering the project started out with the "affordable" AMG model, maybe we are asking too much.
