Mercedes is only making a few of its crazy G 63 AMG 6x6 models, which is not surprising when you consider each costs more than the carbon-fiber Lexus LFA supercar. But despite the small numbers, these three-axle machines get global recognition, the gigantic proportions creating a stir whenever one is spotted.
There's not question it's going to be one of the most iconic cars ever to wear the Mercedes badge. Yet we wonder how many of the people who photograph these things say to themselves "I can never afford one, it costs four times as much as my house".
There is, however, a way to enjoy the G 63 AMG 6x6 in a sensible way, as a scale model. Finding 'toy' has been as hard as searching for the proverbial needle in a haystack, but we've managed to crack it. A recently established company called Great Lighting Models sells two versions, one in black and another in silver.
They look just like the real thing, right down to the smallest details. Each model is hand-crafted from various materials. Actually getting them is going to be the tricky part though. We found a German website that stocks both and offer them at €109 a piece. Only two models roll off the production line once a batch is made, so production is limited to just 299 for each color.(
We will admit that the quality of the body and the fact that the models are 1/43 scale, not 1/18, hasn't blown us over. But if you know somebody who's a huge G-Wagon fans, this limited edition scale model might be the perfect toy come Christmas time.
