Mercedes G-Klasse to Get Right Hand Drive Again

A six-year period of waiting for a right hand drive version of the G-Klasse will soon be over, as German carmaker Mercedes plans to start offering such a version in the UK as soon as the end of 2010.

The first off-roader to arrive to the Island will be the G500 petrol V8 which, according to PistonHeads, will wear a price tag of in between 70,000 to 80,000 pounds. The next addition will come in 2011, in the form of the G350 diesel and the G55 Kompressor. The latter will be priced, according to the inside source cited by PistonHeads, with a figure which starts with a 9.

If true, this will be the first factory-built right hand drive of the G-Klasse. Back in 2004, when the last G-Klasse saw the UK, it came in the form of an AMG-conversion right-hand drive. The new cars however will be built by Magna-Steyr in Graz, Austria.

The news of the G-Klasse coming to the UK from Austria, complete with right-hand drive, comes after the model was confirmed to be produced by Magna until the end of 2015, despite the decline in sales registered over the past year.

"The G-Class has a high symbolic value for automobile production in Styria, since it has been built in Graz for the past 30 years," Siegfried Wolf, Magna Steyr CEO said in a statement back in 2009. "Magna has the strongest balance sheet in the supplier industry, with net cash reserves of more than 1.5 billion euros."

The new versions of the G-Klasse will only be sold from Mercedes-Benz World at Brooklands in Surrey.
