Mercedes EQ C Sheds Camo, Reveals Interior

Nearing its debut, the EQ C has shed even more camouflage, especially around the front. Not interested? Our spy photographers were also able to get close enough and snap a few shots of the dashboard.

Rather disappointingly, the SUV doesn't look radically different to all the other Mercedes-Benz models, especially inside. The bespoke SUV has a now very familiar panoramic screen setup. It's very luxurious, but not innovative.

The first model in Mercedes' family of EVs, the EQ C has already been previewed by a more radical looking concept. It had a fully lit blue grille and more narrow headlights. However, the production car does at least set itself apart from SUVs that are powered by internal combustion engines.

While we already believe the Audi e-tron quattro will be better looking, and that's unfairly passed judgment, the comparison with the Jaguar I-Pace is more straightforward. Simply put, the Brits have been much more original, with their cut-out center console, scooped out hood and rakish rear. However, Mercedes is a dominating force in the luxury car market, and that will give the EQ C an unfair advantage.

The technology package is very important. The MBUX system, for example, will offer several interesting features like smart voice commands. In the spy photos, we also see that the center console appears similar to the one in the 2019 GLC, with the new multifunction touchpad that has handwriting recognition.

The full reveal of the EQ C is only a few weeks away, scheduled for September 4 in Stockholm, Sweden. The powertrain details aren't clear, two electric motors are guaranteed. They should deliver a combined output of around 400 horsepower and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque with a 70 kWh battery offering a theoretical range of 500 km (311 miles).

Of course, in coming years, several versions are likely to come out. Mercedes also plans to make the EQ A compact and EQ S flagship at its French factory.
