It's been nearly a month since we reported on the rumor of the EQ A coming to the Frankfurt Motor Show. Today, we got the first official sketch from Mercedes-Benz, and it seems the speculation was only partially true.

Mercedes was supposed to take advantage of crossover boom and give us a small electric one. It made sense since the first EV preview concept was also a crossover. But it seems the Germans are keeping things nice and European instead of following the lead set by Tesla.

The EQ A concept is not a crossover, but a hatchback, which means it's not for the Americans. What's more, the concept clearly has only three doors.

Nearly half of the design has an uncanny similarity to the Volkswagen Scirocco. For example, the shoulders are very wide and curved at the back of the car, but the body then shrinks drastically around the greenhouse. The door sill area is also similar to the 'Rocco, and we've even seen that sort of design on the original Scirocco concept about a decade ago.

Don't get us wrong - we like it a lot. The front end is more Mercedes-like, with a perspex piece replacing the grille and backlit to suggest the design of a grille and emblem. Narrow headlights are similar to the ones on the A-Class limousine.

So far, they haven't given us any specs. But we expect to see the 400-kilometer range of the Zoe and Leaf to be matched. That's about double that of the BMW i3, even with the range extender.

Production is rumored to start as early as 2019. This will be the second of at least 10 EVs Daimler wants to launch by 2025.

Since we mentioned Volkswagen, let's go all the way and highlight their plan to revive the Scirocco as an EV with up to 300 horsepower. It's said to be the "heart" of the I.D. electric car brand.
