Mercedes Dismiss F1 Role for Ralf Schumacher

Ralf Schumacher seems to be contemplating a future driving seat inside the 2010 Formula One Championship, according to recent reports. Although he reportedly talked to a number of teams for an F1 return, the 34-year old was also believed to be in contention for a testing role within the Mercedes GP outfit.

The German driver spent the last couple of years driving an AMG Mercedes C-Klasse for Mercedes' works team.

However, when asked about this prospect by the Italian newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, Daimler and Mercedes chief executive Dieter Zetsche dismissed the allegations, insisting that one Schumacher is more than enough for the German manufacturer's F1 team.

He (Ralf) is already our driver in another series. To have one Schumacher in the (F1) team, especially if it is Michael, is more than enough,” Zetsche told the aforementioned source, when at the Detroit Motor Show yesterday.

Some other reports in Germany suggested that the reason why Ralf is searching for a job back in Formula One – where he reportedly met with the officials for Stefan GP – is because his own seat in the DTM series is in danger. David Coulthard, who is currently a Red Bull advisor, was recently linked with a seat at Mercedes, replacing the youngest of the Schumacher brothers.

In the meantime, Mercedes GP is still to name a full-time reserve/test driver for the 2010 season. Another name linked with that spot is young Marcus Ericsson. The Swede has recently become champion of the Japanese F3 Series and has tested for Mercedes GP during the rookies session at Jerez, last month.
