Mercedes Developing Uber-CLS to Challenge Bentley

When it comes to mixing high performance and luxury, few do it better than Mercedes-Benz. But what if money was no object for you, and you liked beady little headlights and chrome grilles? Yes, we’re talking about the Bentley Continental, a two (and a bit) ton monster filled with a sea of cowhide that can accelerate to 100 km/h (62 mph) in less than five seconds and lets the owner flirt with the speeds normally reserved for supercars.

According to Autocar, Mercedes Benz might have this very fact in mind, as it is looking to make a stronger statement with a new four-door rival that will slot alongside the CL. The model that’s called the “uber-CLS” will still have that four-door coupe look, but it will be much larger and will provide a high-end feel.

There's no specifics as to what might motivate the uber-CLS (God, that sounds so sexy!) but we're thinking along the lines of either a tuned-up version of the CLS63 AMG's naturally aspirated 6.2-liter 507 hp V8, or a borrowed biturbo (either the 6.0-liter V-12 from the CL65 AMG or the 5.5-liter V-8 from the CL63 AMG). All would make it a decent match for the Bentley’s W12 or the upcoming V8 version.

Mercedes believes that it can get away with having to four-door coupes in its range because of the burgeoning market for ultra-expensive, high-performance models, particularly in Russia and the Middle East.

Maybach might also see a spin-off, according to Autocar sources that pointed the finger at Zenatec’s Coupe, which received a lot of interest.
