Mercedes Confirms Schumacher Will Race Until 2012

Michael Schumacher did not have a dreamy comeback in the sport of Formula One, as the 7-time world champion has been constantly outpaced by his much younger teammate Nico Rosberg in both qualifying and race for the past 3 rounds of the 2010 season. Nevertheless, amid reports that he is considering a quit from his contract with Mercedes GP “before time”, the Stuttgart company's motorsport director Norbert Haug insisted this will never be the case.

The German official emphasized the role of the car in Schumacher's questionable performances so far, and insisted that the 41-year old will see his contract to the end as a racer. Schu signed a 3-year deal with Mercedes GP in the late months of 2009, but many questioned whether he'll spend all those years as a driver or switch to an ambassador role for the German marque in the meantime.

I know that Michael is highly motivated and wants to make his comeback for the long term, with long term success. The fact that he has not had better results so far is not his fault,” said Haug, hinting that the team needs to provide the German with a better machine in order for him to challenge for race wins. “As soon as the car can do it, so can Michael.”

Additionally, he insisted that Schumacher's return to greatness was also looked at as a smooth transition by his new team, as he came back to grand prix racing after a 3-year period outside any activity of such kind. Consequently, his point deficit in the standings is not so bad, if you take into consideration the factors around Schu's comeback.

The true fans are experts and know exactly what has happened so far and why there is the points deficit,” added Haug.

After 3 rounds in the 2010 season, Schumacher is sitting in 10th place overall, some 30 points behind leader Felipe Massa and 26 points behind teammate Nico Rosberg.
