Mercedes Confirm DTM Interest in Bruno Senna

Bruno Senna might not make his awaited debut in Formula 1 in 2009, but he is very close to landing a DTM deal with Mercedes for the upcoming season. Following the likelihood of Rubens Barrichello extending his current deal with Honda Racing – the only available seat in Formula 1 at the moment – Bruno had already started looking for a 2009 job in other racing series.

The German championship is also known as an F1-friendly series because of 2 reasons. First of all, it has become the home series of several drivers who have ended their racing careers in F1 – see Jean Alesi, Mika Hakkinen and, most recently, Ralf Schumacher. Secondly, McLaren Mercedes often looks to the DTM when choosing their future F1 stars.

As Senna made it very clear that he will not give up his dream of joining the Formula 1 grid in the near future, its only natural that his potential driving role in the DTM could only be linked with Mercedes' works team. Although the German manufacturer has already announced its driver lineup for the upcoming season, the marque's Motorsport Director Norbert Haug allegedly admitted Mercedes' interest in signing Senna.

“There are talks but no decision,” confirmed Haug, according to SID news agency.

The 25-year old Brazilian also confirmed that he'll be reevaluating his options for the 2009 season, as he was expecting a race driving role with Honda Racing in F1. Since that's no longer possible – if we're to believe the latest media reports on the matter – any racing opportunity would be welcomed. As the situation presents itself at the moment, talks with Mercedes are likely to resume once Bruno's future in F1 would be clear officially.
