Mercedes C450 AMG Acceleration Test: Why You Don't Need the C63

For many years, the C63 AMG has been de undisputed champion of tire shredding sideways action in the premium compact car segment. But now Mercedes wants to turn the AMG division into a money-making machine that sells tens of thousands of cars per year.

On paper, that's definitely a bad thing, since they couldn't possibly built all those engines by hand. But they've started this ambitious plan by putting their right foot forward: the C450 AMG Sport. This isn't a real AMG car, more likely a rival to the Audi S4 and its supercharged V6.

Under the bonnet is a brand new 3-liter engine, the first one of its kind made by Mercedes with a twin-turbo setup. It delivers a staggering amount of power: 367 PS, which is 34 PS more than the similarly equipped C400 and 61 PS more than the old 3.5-liter V6.

Crucially though, torque levels have gone up to 520 Newton meters, where the V6 engine sets new standards in its segment. It's almost as much as the 5.5-liter AMG-tuned engine still used by the SLK roadster.

With that much muscle and a standard 4Matic all-wheel drive system, the C450 AMG needs 4.9 seconds to reach 100 km/h in sedan form or, as is the case here, 5 seconds if it's an estate. So basically, you get the performance that a real AMG used to offer a few years ago and the fuel economy of a V6 for a lot less money. Who wants stiff suspension and loud exhaust any more?
