Not to be outdone by BMW, who have released, along with their new 3-Series, a turbocharged 1.6-liter engine to power their 316i, with a power output of 136 hp and a torque figure of 220 Nm (162 lb-ft), Mercedes-Benz are fighting back with their own, rather similar 1.6 turbo.
The new engine will equip the C-Class and is a longitudinally mounted version of the engine which is expected to debut in the new A-Class, where it will be available with two power outputs: 121 and 154 hp, while a version of the engine, bored out to 1991cc is good for 208 hp.

Using clever technologies as electronic cam lift, piezo injectors, multi-spark iginition and a clever turbocharging system, the car is Euro 6 ready and offers ‘diesel levels’ of torque and fuel efficiency. This all sounds very good, as one of the main downsides of the current C-Class was the lack of a good sub 2-liter motor which was both fun to drive and economical.

It is expected to debut on the C-Class and A-Class (in which it will be transversely mounted) and we’re very curious as to how the engine will perform in the heavy-ish 3-Series rival when it becomes available for testing, later this summer.
