Since Mercedes-Benz has just revealed the GLE Coupe, it really does seem like they are chasing after some of the segments which Audi and BMW have already covered. Even the supermini crossover is being targeted, as a car the size the Nissan Juke was previewed by a concept car in China. In the very lucrative four-door coupe, they already have the A-Class based CLA and the much larger CLS, the original four-door coupe that founded the segment.
The next logical step would be to offer something in the middle, not quite as expensive or large as the 5-meter CLS, but not as cheap and… well… front-wheel drive as the CLA.
And so we arrive at the C-Class four-door coupe conundrum. Should Mercedes finally launch a rival for the Audi A5 Sportback and the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe?
We think the answer is "no", because every time a German company targets too many niches, it dilutes the core products. The W205 C-Class already has a sexy body shape, but it does lack that practical liftback boot design that's great for larger items.
That's exactly what the C-Class has gained though the renderings of Theophilus Chin. The first ones he did back in April 2014, using the boot design of the Coupe SUV Concept (as in GLE Coupe preview). Now he's revisited the subject and done a sleeker design, which we think is on par with what BMW and Audi are offering.
The C-Class Sportcoupe is, at the end of the day, just a sedan with a slightly bigger boot. it shouldn't take that long to build and develop. The only question is: will people buy one? Mercedes will have to spend millions on market research, but since we can't do that, we'll just ask you guys what you think.
