Mercedes Boss Defends Schumacher After Australia Failure

Mercedes' motorsport director Norbert Haug fended off suggestions that Michael Schumacher is on his way to doing a second consecutive disastrous appearance in Formula 1 this season.

Time seemed to stand still last weekend in Australia, as Schumacher once again failed to make it past the Q2 on Saturday, while recording a DNF on Sunday following a contact with STR's Jaime Alguersuari. As compared to the 42-year old, Rosberg made it to Q3 and enjoyed a better first half of the race, until Williams' Rubens Barrichello forgot to break and ran right into his MGP W02.

Referring to the gap in performance showed by his two drivers, Haug had a more optimistic view of how Schu's pace will look like in 2011.

Nico and Michael were quite close in the testing,” said the German official, according to the DPA news agency. “And Michael was one tenth from being in the top ten in Melbourne.”

Ever since testing began with the new Pirelli tires, Schumacher has continuously told the media that he finds the new rubber better fit for his racing style. In fact, during the last day of testing in Barcelona, the German topped the timing reports and confirmed his great form prior to the new campaign.

On the Saturday before the Australian Grand Prix however, Schu was only 0.091 seconds short of a Q3 entry, which would have given him a better grid position for the race.
