Mercedes-Benz Will Introduce 10 New PHEVs by 2017

If electric vehicles and plug-in cars are the future of the automotive industry, then Mercedes-Benz are already building their time-traveling space shuttle. No, they’re not building a spaceship to rival NASA but they want to add 10 plug-in hybrids in their lineup in the next two years.

At this moment, Mercedes-Benz Cars has nine hybrid and electric drive vehicles in its range, including the smart fortwo electric drive. Now, we won’t start naming each and every one of them, but we will tell you that by 2017, another 10 PHEVs will join them.

These models will receive the letter ‘e’ according to Mercedes-Benz’s rebranding strategy so customers will know that whenever the ‘e’ is involved, they’re dealing with a Stuttgart-bred PHEV. For example, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class version known before as the C350 Plug-In Hybrid received a simplified name and is now called the C350e. We also know that the GLE was chosen by Mercedes-Benz officials to become the automaker’s first ever plug-in crossover, but this is likely to happen only after the non-coupe variant will make a debut.

And we’re not done yet, not since Mercedes showed the Concept V-ision E van at the Geneva Motor Show, hinting at a future plug-in hybrid V-Class or Metris in the United States.

Plug-in hybrids are a key technology on the road to local emission-free future of the automobile. Plug-in hybrids offer our customers the best of both worlds; in the city they can drive in all-electric mode, while on long journeys they benefit from the combustion engine’s range,” said Prof Dr Thomas Weber, member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG.

It is yet unclear what models will receive the ‘e’ badge from Mercedes-Benz or which ones are destined for the US or the European market, but the German carmaker will also be looking to reduce its fleet emissions even more so we should be seeing a new model with hybrid drive every four months on average.
