Mercedes-Benz Wants More Production Capacity in The US

Despite having achieved an all-time production record last year, Mercedes-Benz is still having trouble as far high demand for its products goes, with most of the German company's factories working at full capacity and in need of more.

The highly-successful MFA (Modular Front Architecture) platform has exceeded all expectations, and with two models expected to receive orders through the roof this year (new C-Class W205 and the GLA X156), Daimler AG is already considering some new plants or at least an increase in production capacity for current ones.

According to a report by Automotive News, Daimler AG CEO and magic-mustache man Dieter Zetsche is actively looking for a solution for the under-capacity of Mercedes-Benz plants, with North America being one of the designated targets.

It is now yet known if the Mercedes-Benz plant in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, will suffer a “facelift” for increasing its production capacity or another plant altogether will be constructed at this point.

The Germans are expecting sales of models built on the MFA platform to rise this year to around half a million from last year's 370,000, especially since both the GLA X156 and the CLA Shooting Brake X117 should arrive in showrooms in the upcoming months.

To top it all, Zetsche is already thinking about the future generation of the MFA, which will consist of even more models – including a possible SLA Roadster – and their supply and demand problems.

“Independent of what we are planning mid-term, for the next generation front-wheel-drive [cars] we need additional plant capacity with probably a new location.” Zetsche was quoted by Automotive News as saying at the Geneva Motor Show 2014.
