Mercedes-Benz Vito and Viano Upgraded with Adaptive Brake Light

Although the whole auto industry is these days revolving around passenger cars, commercial vehicles have their own share of news, today thanks to Mercedes. The German manufacturer has just announced an upgrade for Vito and VIano which are now both featuring Mercedes' Adaptive Brake Light. Basically, the new system provides improved warning effect for following traffic and additional integration of the hazard warning system.

To better understand how it works, imagine a car driving with speeds greater than 50 km/h. In case the driver heavily pushes the brake pedal, the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) automatically activates the Adaptive Brake Light system. As a result, the brake lights are now flashing at a frequency of 3 Hz instead of keeping the same intensity as long as the driver presses the pedal. This makes the car easier noticeable and informs the following drivers of a potential hazard ahead.

Once the driver releases the brake pedal, the ESP automatically turns off the function and the flash lights work just as normal. "These flashing brake lights ensure a higher level of attention on the part of following traffic," Mercedes concludes.

But that's not all. In case the driver presses the brake pedal at a speed over 70 km/h, trying to entirely stop the vehicle, and the ESP turns on the Adaptive Brake Light system, the hazard warning system is automatically activated when the car stops. Obviously, it can be manually turned off anytime the driver wants do. Furthermore, the hazard lights are also deactivated once the Vito or the Viano reach speeds exceeding 10 km/h.
