Following the example of its arch-rival BMW, Mercedes-Benz revealed at the Auto China 2010 the long-wheelbase version of its large premium sedan, the E-Class. Longer wheelbase versions are a must on the Chinese market and the brand from Stuttgart is therefore offering a rival for the BMW 5 Series long.

The new model will represent an important sales growth instrument in China, arriving at dealerships at the end of June. It is the first Mercedes-Benz model to be developed specifically for the Chinese market. The car will be produced locally by the Beijing Benz Automotive Corporation

“The new long wheelbase E-Class stands as an example of our regional portfolio strategy and for our long-term commitment to the Chinese market, where this year we want to sell more than 100,000 vehicles for the first time,” said Daimler CEO Dieter Zetsche. “I am certain that the new E-Class L will make a significant contribution to that,” he added.

The E-Class L has a wheelbase of 3,014 millimeters and an overall length of 5,000 millimeters. In China, many business saloon customers prefer to be chauffeured rather than driving themselves. The E-Class L offers 14 centimeters more legroom in the rear compartment than the standard E-Class. Another advantage is that the position of the front passenger seat can be adjusted electrically form the rear of the car. The ground clearance has grown slightly as well.

When sales start, the E-Class L will be offered with a range of two petrol engines: E 260 CGI (204 hp) and E 300 (245 hp).
