The current generation of the Mercedes-Benz CL will be the last of its kind, as the Germans have decided to bring back the S-Coupe nameplate for its replacement. According to a recent report by Mercedes-Benz Passion, the look of the new S-Class Coupe will be teased by a concept version at the upcoming 2013 edition of the Frankfurt Auto Show.
The actual production car will be unveiled at or near the 2014 North American Auto Show, in Detroit, with European deliveries starting as early as March 2014.

The “S-Class Coupe” nameplate has had a very short history at Mercedes-Benz, as it was used for a brief stint between 1994 and 1996, after which it was replaced for the following years until now with “CL”.

In essence, the Stuttgart manufacturer will try with this new naming strategy to align the “CL” with the S-Class just like the E-Coupe and the C-Coupe are aligned with their sedan counterparts.

Curiously, though, the new S-Coupe will have a rather different design than its saloon counterpart, unlike the aforementioned coupes, which are very similar in looks with the four-door version. We will learn more about how the car will look after seeing the first images of the Concept S-Class Coupe, though, bound to be unveiled in the next few days.

Editor's Note: The car above is the Mercedes-Benz F200 Imagination Concept from 1996, which was prefiguring the W215 CL-Class (see the license plate).
