The teasing department at Mercedes-Benz appears to need a little creative infusion as all it can produce at the moment are darkened images of the front of the vehicles.
We've seen the Project ONE AMG hypercar teased this way the past few days, with some headlights and a bit of radiator grille completing the rest of the silhouette we've known for a while, and now Mercedes-Benz released a similar image of its second all-electric model in the EQ range.

After making its intentions clear at last year's Paris Auto Show where the EQ sub-brand was launched in the presence of the Generation EQ Concept, Mercedes-Benz is now following that up with a new battery-powered model.

The Germans confirmed it would be a compact-sized car, but up until this point we did not know for sure whether it'd have the body of a hatchback or a sedan. By announcing it will bear the name EQ A, Mercedes has all but lift the lid on that one, even though the extended A-Class does have the CLA sedan in its ranks.

If the name didn't spill the beans completely, one of the two pictures surely did. It shows a blue outline of the EQ A's shape, and it's definitely a hatchback. Considering the vehicle is mainly destined for the European market, the only reason why Mercedes-Benz might have gone for a sedan was to challenge Tesla's Model 3.

However, we doubt the battery-powered Merc will sell for $35,000 (or the European equivalent) since that's about the starting price for an ICE A-Class, so targeting Tesla wouldn't be the wisest decision. Not yet, at least.

The EQ A will follow the EQ C electric crossover that will be based on the Generation EQ Concept shown last year. The timeline for these models is 2019 for the EQ C, followed the next year by the hatchback. The rest of the lineup is unknown at this point, but considering the SUV has the "C" moniker, that would suggest the distinction between SUVs and non-SUV models will not be carried over from the traditional model range.

Details surrounding the EQ A are scarce at the moment, but on the other hand we're just nine days away from the start of the Frankfurt Motor Show where the new EV will have its premiere. We'll see then if the touted 300-mile range and approximately $40,000 price tag are true, but the question whether they will still be enough to make the EQ A a success in 2020 remains.
