Because multi-purpose vehicle is a no-no in today’s automotive marketing, Mercedes-Benz decided to refer to the B-Class as the “perfect vehicle for the whole family” that “puts the emphasis on sport with the Sports Tourer.” After the introduction at the 2018 Paris Motor Show, the W247 has started production at the Rastatt facility in Germany.
“Our entire team is proud of the fact that Rastatt will remain inextricably linked with the B-Class in the future,” declared said Thomas Geier, site manager of the factory. Deliveries are due to begin in the earliest part of 2019, and pricing will be announced in December 2018 for most European markets.

The long wheelbase (2,729 millimeters) with short overhangs favors interior space, and design influences from the A-Class are present in and out of the B-Class. Customers can choose 16- to 19-inch wheels, and as standard, the W247 comes with H7 headlamps and LED daytime running lights.

Mercedes-Benz made the driving position 90 millimeters higher than in the A-Class, making the most of the all-around view. The cross-sections of the roof pillars were also designed to obscure less of the surroundings. On the technological front, the cockpit features two 7.0-inch displays as standard.

On range-topping versions, Mercedes-Benz is much obliged to equip two 10.25-inch displays for the instrument cluster and infotainment system, making the most out of the MBUX. The B-Class is furthered by 64-color ambient lighting and no less than “ten color worlds."

The rear seats fold 40:20:40 from the get-go, but Mercedes-Benz hasn’t provided a sliding mechanism yet. That option will arrive in mid-2019, allowing the user to slide the rear seats forward by up to 14 centimeters. By doing so, the capacity of the luggage compartment behind the rear seats grows from 455 to 705 liters.

At launch, five engine options will be available in Germany. The list starts with the B 180 (136 PS), continues with the B 200 (163 PS), and is rounded off by three turbo diesels (B 180 d, B 200 d, B 220 d). The most potent of the lot is the B 220 d, rated at 190 PS and 400 Nm. All engines are matched to dual-clutch transmissions with either seven or eight forward gears.
