Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG Gets Plus X Award

After on Friday the Swedish from Volvo proudly announced their newest S60 generation received the Plus X Award in the Innovation category, German carmaker Daimler announced a similar feat for its newest super sports car, the SLS AMG.

The so-called Gullwing received the award for High Quality and Design in what is the world's largest technology, sport and lifestyle contest. 144 jurors from 32 nations select, test and that award the best product from a variety of fields in the in categories Innovation, High Quality, Design, Ease of Use/Functionality, Ergonomics and Ecology.

“With its exciting design and gull-wing doors, the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG harks back to that sporting legend of the 1950's - the 300 SL,” Daimler says about its supercar.

“The super sports car also dazzles with its exquisite technology which includes such highlights as an aluminum spaceframe body shell, AMG 6.3-litre V8 front mid engine, seven-speed double-clutch transmission in a transaxle arrangement and a responsive sports suspension with aluminum double-wishbone axles. This unique high-tech combination helps to guarantee the highest level of driving dynamics.”

The SLS AMG, priced at around 177,300 euros, is powered by the above mentioned engine, which develops 571 horsepower (420 kW) at 6800 rpm and a maximum torque of 650 Nm at 4,750 rpm.

Helped by the seven-speed double-clutch transmission, it reaches 60 mph from a standstill in 3.8 seconds and keeps on accelerating until it reaches 315 km/h (195 mph).

On the interior, the SLS takes more elements from aircraft construction design, seen on the dashboard and center console. Highlights include nappa leather, solid metal and (optional) genuine carbon-fibre facings, with five different leather colours available: black, classic red, sand, porcelain and light brown.
