Today was a pretty good day for the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, as the three-pointed star flagship sedan just won the 2014 World Luxury Car award at the New York International Auto Show, despite the fact that it wasn't exactly a surprise for anyone.
The Sonder Klasse (Special Class in German) was chosen from an initial entry list of 10 luxury cars from all over the world, after which it also got past a short list comprising the Bentley Flying Spur and, for some reason, the Range Rover Sport.
“It is not only our customers who expect a new S-Class to set standards - but also the journalists,” said Prof. Thomas Weber, Member of the Board of Management Daimler AG, responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development. “The success of the S-Class in this category makes us very proud indeed, and once more demonstrates that we have met these expectations.”
Inaugurated back in 2003, the World Car of The Year awards were officially launched in January 2004 and apparently are the number one awards program in the world if we are to take into account Prime Research's 2013 report.
This is the first year for the World Luxury Car award category, so the Mercedes-Benz S-Class gets the honor of being the first ever winner of this competition.
An international jury panel consisting of no less than sixty-nine automotive journalists from twenty-two countries selected and voted for tens of cars in before the finalists where chosen.
This is probably the fifth but arguably the most important “Luxury Car of The Year” award that the Mercedes-Benz S-Class has put under its belt this year, which goes to show that we're not the only ones who think that it's a marvelous.
