Mercedes-Benz S 500 W222 Tested by autoevolution

The flagship sedan in the Mercedes-Benz range is the S-Class - seen by many as the best car the world. Coming from a 50+ years line of “Sonder Klasse” models (“special class” in German), the latest W222 generation of the S-Class is ready to take on the world's best once again.

To see if most of the hype surrounding the new luxury sedan has been exaggerated in any way we decided to test the current non-AMG flagship in the model range, the S 500 (or 550 in the US), in its rear-wheel drive version.

The first area that gives you some clues of how special is the new... special class from Mercedes-Benz is, of course, the exterior design. Sure, the car is engulfed in LED lights inside and outside, with not a single lightbulb to be found anywhere on the car, but even the lighting is understated and simply exudes as much elegance as the quiet lines of the exterior.

All in all, the exterior look is simply one of the best definitions of the “I have arrived” statement, whether you have been driving it or chauffeured in the back.

With perfect proportions and stance comes a great interior as well. The highly configurable cabin can be seen as probably the best reason to buy a new Mercedes-Benz S-Class, especially since the interior ambiance is of pure opulence and comfort if the car is specced accordingly.

Sure, it's not exactly the lightest luxury car on its feet, but the way it gathers speed can be expressed in only one word: effortless. The twin-turbocharged 4.7-liter V8 is hardly heard inside – or outside, for that matter – but the 455 hp and 700 Nm (516 lb ft) of torque are more than enough to give the Mercedes-Benz S 500 enough oomph to keep up with a base Porsche 911 in a straight line.
