Launched back at the 2013 edition of the Frankfurt Motor Show, the hyper-frugal Mercedes-Benz S 500 Plug-in Hybrid is nearing closer and closer to the date when it finally reaches showrooms, and it seems that this July will be the month when customers will actually be able to drive one.
The second plug-in hybrid luxury car in history, after the Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrid, the Mercedes-Benz S 500 Plug-in Hybrid will also be the most fuel efficient luxury sedan on the planet, with the official numbers stating a hard-to-believe three liters per 100 km (78.4 mpg) fuel consumption.

Combining the M278 DELA 30 engine with a powerful electric motor and a battery that can also be rechargeable from an exterior outlet, the first plug-in hybrid production car from Mercedes-Benz spares no expenses when it comes to combining performance, comfort and fuel economy.

Keep in mind that the 333 hp and 480 Nm (354 lb ft) of torque from the internal combustion engine are paired with 109 hp and 340 Nm (251 lb ft) of torque from an electric motor, giving the S 500 Plug-in Hybrid a naught to 100 km/h (62 mph) acceleration time of just 5.5 seconds and an electronically-limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph).

Coupled with an electric power only range of around 30 km (18.6 miles) according to European driving assessment, the model comes dangerously close to sounding like an almost perfect luxury car, especially since it manages to offer a low fuel consumption with none of the downsides of a small diesel engine or the range-anxiety that comes with an all-electric car.

Pricing for the Mercedes-Benz S 500 Plug-in Hybrid hasn't been announced yet, but expect it to cost just a tad more than the “regular” S 500 model, which starts at EUR 108.944,50 including 19 percent VAT in Germany for the long-wheelbase model. In other words, the Plug-in Hybrid should revolve around EUR 120000, but we're waiting for official confirmation so stay tuned.
