Mercedes-Benz is reportedly on the path of creating a sub-brand for electric cars, which will compete with BMW i and Tesla Motors.
While official sources have not commented on the matter, people familiar with the subject have revealed information regarding the three-pointed-star’ plans under the protection of anonymity. First of all, the sub-brand will have a different name, which has yet to be decided.

Secondly, Mercedes-Benz’s new all-electric range will consist of two electric SUVs, which will be joined in the offer by two electric sedans. The German brand has already confirmed it will showcase an electric SUV with an estimated range of approximately 500 kilometers (310 miles) at this year’s Paris Auto Show, so we should have more information soon regarding the new direction for the Stuttgart brand.

Until this new sub-brand, Mercedes-Benz directly converted existing models into electric vehicles. BMW and Tesla have adopted different strategies on this topic, and so have Renault and Nissan, which have developed specific platforms, designs, and body shells for pure electric vehicles.

While BMW is carefully pondering the next step of the “BMW i” range, Mercedes-Benz appears to have begun a serious offensive in the field of electric vehicles, as Automotive News observes.

The three-pointed-star from Stuttgart had previously made plans for a range of electric models set to be launched by the end of the decade, but selling them under a different name would bring a surprising change of strategy.

Mercedes-Benz is not at its first name change in its lineup, as the AMG portfolio has begun to be called Mercedes-AMG, eliminating the “Benz” particle, while some of its models have been renamed to make the range easier to understand.

Among the best examples are the S-Class Coupe, which used to be named CL, and the E-Class Coupe, which used to be an E-Class-designed interpretation of design placed on a C-Class platform.
