Although the C-Class nameplate was only introduced in May 1993, we can consider the Mercedes-Benz 190 - launched way back in 1982 – as the original C-Class, or at least part of the C-Class family.
At the time it was nicknamed the “Baby Benz, since it was the smallest Mercedes-Benz in the range. Over the years, the smallest sedan from Stuttgart has managed to acquire both fans around the world and a large share of the premium compact segment, where it battles and sometimes even wins over the much more established BMW 3-Series.

So it happens that over the course of four generations (we are including the 190 and not acknowledging the bad arithmetics in the official press release, which state that the current C-Class is the fifth generation – which is not), the C-Class has sold in over 10 millions units all over the world.

The current model series alone has sold more than 2.3 million units of sedans, estates and coupes.

Dr Joachim Schmidt, Executive Vice President, Sales and Marketing Mercedes-Benz Cars: “The Mercedes-Benz C-Class is a global success story. Sales of over 10 million C-Class cars speak for themselves. Launched as the ‘Baby Benz’, it is now one of the most popular cars in the premium segment. The innovative engineering and impressive efficiency of the C-Class have been inspiring our customers for more than 30 years.”

Starting with the upcoming fifth generation of the car, the C-Class will also be the only Mercedes-Benz that is built on four continents, being manufactured in Bremen (Germany), East London (South Africa), Beijing (China) and from 2014 in Tuscaloosa (USA). We're wondering if magic moustache man, Dieter Zetsche, is now on a listening spree of “A Milli” by Lil Wayne.
