Mercedes-Benz R-Class Successor to be in Planning

Despite selling like cold cupcakes over its almost eight year life span, the Mercedes-Benz R-Class is still very much a loved child in the Mercedes-Benz offices.

So loved, in fact, that despite lackluster sales since almost its first year of availability, the model was kept in production until 2013, also receiving a rather thorough facelift in between.

Most people thought that this year will be comprising the model's final days, despite the car still being offered in China, for example.

According to the Germans form Auto Bild, Mercedes-Benz might actually be brewing a successor for the R-Class, which is to be named “Sport Cruiser”, or Mercedes-Benz SC-Class. If you remember, the concept for the R-Class crossover was called “Grand Sport Tourer”, or GST.

Following a similar general idea as the R-Class, the new Mercedes-Benz Sport Cruiser should look like the result of a threesome between a CLS Shooting Brake, the upcoming V-Class and the GL-Class, or a coupe-like van on stilts, if you may.

We don't know if Auto Bild's info comes from a reliable source or not but we sincerely hope that the end-result won't look like the above “piglet-on-wheels” rendering.
