The Mercedes Benz naming system is a mix between old systems and new ones. Right now, it’s a bit confusing to say the least - the SL for instance would have to be the sportiest and lightest if we’re to believe its name, but it isn’t.
Automobile Magazine has the scoop on the new system, and it’s simplified, but still confusing.
The C, E and S-Class will all keep their names, and presumably so will the SL, SLK and SLS supercar.
But naming will soon be made based on platforms and body styles. Coupes will all start with CL, for instance, and the baby four-door coupe will be the first to use the system. When it enters production at Mercedes’ Hungarian plant next year, it will he called the CLA, since it’s the smallest.
Next up, the C-Class with two doors will be called the CLC, a name that was used a generation ago for a sort of C-Class hatchback. The E-Coupe will become the CLE, but the biggest coupe they make is troubling.
The replacement for the CL will of course be akin to the S-Class, but it won’t be called the CLS since this already is used by our favorite four-door coupe. So it will be known as the SLC.
In the SUV world, a new A-Class sized crossover will be named the GLA, while the current GLK will become the GLC. The G-Class itself will be considered a flagship and will keep its current designation.
