Mercedes-Benz Nearly Uncovers EQA Electric Prototype Before Official Unveiling

With just a under a week remaining until we finally get to see the 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQA in the flesh, the German carmaker is still testing pre-production prototypes but with hardly any camouflage left on them.

Such is the case of the following prototype, which was spotted during the same day when Mercedes-Benz teased the model’s official reveal, which will take place next Wednesday, on January 20.

While some were a bit taken aback by what appears to be a rather small, by modern standards, central display screen, it’s the exterior that we’re mostly curious about.

As most of you know, the EQA is essentially a second-generation Mercedes-Benz GLA that has had its internal combustion engine, transmission and fuel tank replaced by at least one electric motor and a lithium-ion battery.

Contrary to earlier expectations, it looks like the launch version of the 2022 Mercedes-Benz GLA will be front-wheel-drive, with a single electric motor powering a single axle.

With 190 horsepower on tap and an energy consumption of 15.7 kWh/100 km, it sounds like the EQA 250 will become the least expensive electric Mercedes-Benz in the upcoming EQ lineup.

According to official intel, dual-motor and all-wheel-drive versions with at least 272 horsepower will eventually become available later this year, when the car goes on sale.

Not much else is officially known at this point, but we’re pretty sure that the top of the range version will feature at least a 60-kWh Li-ion battery, which should be enough for a range of around 400 kilometers (249 miles) in the WLTP test cycle.

In total, the EQA lineup is expected to come with at least two power outputs, two types of traction and two differently sized batteries.

The small electric crossover will be joined by its EQB bigger brother, which may also come with a seven-seat option, just like the ICE-powered GLB-Class upon which it is based.
