Mercedes-Benz MRA Platform to Underpin at Least Ten Different Models

Prof. Dr. Thomas Weber, Member of the Board Daimler AG, responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development had some rather important things to day to members of the press at the media launch for the Mercedes-Benz GLA and GLA 45 AMG in Spain.

Speaking with the Aussies from Motoring, Weber said: “With this architecture we are able to do much more than 10 different vehicles. […] The main strategy you see when we discuss the MFA architecture is one architecture with only one vehicle wheelbase, five completely different vehicles are possible. The new MRA platform is even more flexible because also more wheelbases are possible, more the width of the vehicle can be differentiated, so it is a completely modular approach.”

The intensive use of aluminium on the first model sporting the new MRA (Modular Rear Architecture) platform, the Mercedes-Benz C-Class W205, has brought a rather dramatic decrease in weight and fuel consumption compared with the previous model, so we can expect some pretty good cars to come out of Stuttgart in the following years.

For example, 2015 and 2016 should bring two all-new crossover SUVs (MLC and GLC), an R-Class replacement and another member of the newly-launched C-Class family.
