In a rather surprising twist, Mercedes-Benz India has apparently been allocated way too few A-class and B-Class from the parent company in Stuttgart. So few, in fact, that the demand is much larger than the offer, so the Indians are asking for a larger share of cars.
Mercedes-Benz is also close to introducing two other compacts from their global range in Indian, the CLA and the just-revealed GLA crossover/SUV.
“When we launched the A Class there were doubts if India was ready for such compact luxury cars. Going by our experience, we can say India is ready. Today one out of every four Mercedes-Benz cars sold in India is a compact car," Eberhard Kern, managing director and CEO of Mercedes-Benz India, was quoted by PTI.
“Today we have an average waiting period of about two months for the A and B-Class cars. We have asked the headquarters for more allocation for these cars for India considering the demand here.”
The two models, assembled in Germany, at the Rastatt plant, are currently being imported in India, but a plan to double the production capacity of the Mercedes-Benz Chakan plant in India may include the introduction of the A-Class and B-Class as locally assembled cars as well.
