The AMG Sports line, as it was initially called, is a perfect way to bridge the (sometimes not so consistent) gap between regular Mercedes-Benz models and their sportier counterparts from AMG.
They’re not full-blown AMG models, but they do benefit from the experience of Affalterbach engineers, so they’re basically the perfect option for those who still seek thrills, yet have a slightly lower tolerance to high speeds.

The Sports line models are also more accessible than the AMG versions, so that’s not something to be overlooked either. Actually, that’s exactly how this new range of models was first introduced: as a gateway for new clients into the AMG world. It sounds cheesy, but it’s also pretty accurate.

Today, Mercedes-Benz is announcing the launch of the new GLE450 AMG 4MATIC, the third sports model after the C450 AMG and the GLE450 AMG Coupe. Unsurprisingly, the GLE450 AMG shares pretty much all of its technical features with the latter of those two, using the same 3.0-liter V6 biturbo engine with increased power and torque output compared to the regular versions.

More to the point, the new Mercedes-Benz GLE450 AMG develops 367 hp and 520 Nm (385 lb-ft), numbers that translate into a 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) sprint of only 5.7 seconds and an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph). Responsible for these absolutely decent figures (especially for a car of this size) are the 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system and the 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic transmission.

It handles well, too

The Mercedes-Benz GLE450 AMG also comes with five driving programs: Individual, Comfort, Slippery, Sport, and Sport Plus. These modify all sorts of driving characteristics ranging from throttle response, load development, switch points, steering, chassis, and even engine sound.

The new sporty SUV also gets the versatile AIRMATIC air suspension as standard. This allows the car to vary its damping algorithms greatly, switching from a comfy ride to a firm, sporty setup in just a few very short moments.

Design-wise, the new Mercedes-Benz GLE450 AMG 4MATIC makes no attempt to hide its abilities, with clear giveaways like the twin chromed tailpipes or the 20-inch five-spoke alloy wheels that come as standard (21-inch rims are available as an option).

On the inside, there’s the usual array of nappa leather, aluminum inserts, flat-bottomed steering wheel, and a bright headliner. The option list is open for the inside trim as well, so nobody will feel left out.

As was the case with the other AMG Sport line models, they make a very convincing case for themselves. You may not get the pleasure of driving a V8 car, but there are a lot of nice things to keep you occupied and keep your mind off that little aspect. Or maybe this is just AMG’s way of getting us used to the idea of a V6 engine in an AMG car before they make the full switch? With the way things are going these days in the automotive world, who can really tell?
