After a search of more than a decade into creating yet untapped market niches – some successful, some not so successful – Mercedes-Benz has finally decided to also follow others, instead of leading.
Which brings us to the Mercedes-Benz Concept Coupe SUV, a luxury crossover/SUV that previews the production version of the MLC, or the three-pointed star weapon to battle the somewhat successful BMW X6.
While the Mercedes-Benz MLC will enter production in the beginning of next year, it will not be the only five-door coupe/SUV in the future three-pointed star lineup.
As some of you know, Mercedes-Benz is dedicated to increase its range of SUVs from five to at least seven in the upcoming years, and the second all-new model to spearhead this increase after the MLC will be smaller GLC.
Based on the MRA (Modular Rear Architecture), the Mercedes-Benz GLC will be using a lot of common parts, including an identical wheelbase, with the second generation of the GLK, which is due to arrive in 2015.
The GLC will essentially be a direct competitor for the newly-unveiled BMW X4 (F26) and the future Audi Q4, just like the GLK has to hold off the BMW X3 and the Audi Q5.
Set to arrive approximately a year after the GLK (X205), the GLC five-door coupe/SUV will only use the more powerful engines in the GLK range, with a GLC 63 AMG variant to complete the lineup in 2017.
Along with the larger MLC, the GLC is supposed to help Mercedes-Benz tap into an untapped territory, which should increase the presence of the Germans the Suv segment from 25 percent to over 40 percent until 2020.
