With its platform brothers and sisters (read: A-Class, B-Class and CLA) selling like gangbusters and bottle-necking the plants where they are manufactured, the Mercedes-Benz GLA is about the share the same fate if all predictions are true.
Almost certain to increase its appeal to future customers is the fact that the GLA (X156) was recently awarded with an environmental certificate in accordance with ISO standard TR 14062.

“We have already demonstrated with the M- and the GLK-Class that energy efficiency and environmental compatibility are fully reconcilable with an SUV. As one of the most fuel-efficient vehicles in its segment, the new GLA-Class is now setting benchmarks in the SUV world,” said Professor Dr Herbert Kohler, Chief Environmental Officer at Daimler AG.

As some of the hardcore three-pointed star aficionados already know, Mercedes-Benz has been analyzing the environmental compatibility of its vehicles throughout their entire life cycle far beyond the legal requirements and for quite some time now.

A recoverability rate of 95 percent by weight will be mandatory on all European cars as of 2015, but the GLA-Class already meets it, becoming the third Mercedes-Benz SUV to be confirmed to do so by the neutral inspectors from the TÜV Süd technical inspection authority.

Not only that, but the stylish crossover/SUV incorporates no less than 41 components which can be produced with the partial use of recycled plastics and 46 components made of natural materials.

For example, the model's load compartment cover is partially made from recycled paper, while the wheel arch linings are made from reprocessed starter batteries and bumper coverings.
