Mercedes-Benz G-Class Rendering Looks Ready to Go on a Toys R Us Shelf

The sad fact is Mercedes-Benz G-Class will have to receive some sort of cosmetic makeover sooner rather than later. How will that transformation leave the mighty G-Wagen looking is still a mystery, one that's set people's imagination on fire.

The G-Class has this very rare quality of having a truly timeless design. Usually, 'timeless' means people will continue to like it over time, but in its case it means people will continue to buy it over time. And they will buy it as a new car, not a classic.

Changing the G-Class is one of those important decisions that can make or break a model and I'm sure somebody at Mercedes-Benz is heavily losing sleep over it. I know I would. It's dangerous to remain rooted in the past, but it can be even more dangerous to change something people have become so familiar with. After all, if it ain't broken, why fix it?

It's the kind of situation where you wouldn't want to be in the shoes of the men making the decision, but at the same time you'd like to have a word in the final outcome. So, where do I sign for a focus-group?

What about these renderings?

Anyhow, whatever the people over at Mercedes-Benz decide to do, we hope they don't get to see these renderings made by ARES Design Modena. Or they do see them and pin them on the 'not like this' board inside the design office.

Where to begin? The drawings use some features found on current Mercedes-Benz models for authenticity, but the rest seems taken out of a manga cartoon. While it does retain the overall boxy shape of the G-Class, there are way too many curvy lines and non-90 degree angles for this to pass as a G-Wagen. Oh, and they say it's G63. Really, with those tires?

The G-Class doesn't need any aesthetic embellishments. It is what it is and if you don't like it, go run to your mommy and complain. Here's to hoping Mercedes-Benz will leave the rugged off-roader untouched and, if they do feel the need to do something new to attract less manly customers (joking, of course), will come up with an additional model in the G-range.
