Firstly unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show last week, the Mercedes-Benz F 015 Luxury in Motion concept also reached the 2015 North American International Auto Show here in Detroit.
After seeing it in flesh and bone, we’re pretty sure this is what the future of cars will look like if you also need to take road safety and other industry regulations into consideration. And yes, it did made us feel like we’re standing up next to one of the cars in The Demolition Man... only better.
As soon as the automatic suicide doors started to open, we saw a very airy and quite big interior, rather than a cramped space dictated by the car’s low profile. This is achieved through smart packaging, with most of the tech being serried into the vehicle’s floor.
The lounge-stilled cockpit is fitted with four rotating individual chairs, which are also electrically powered and can swing outwards by 30 degrees as soon as the doors are open to allow occupants to exit or enter the car easier.
You are not going to find analog gauges or switches inside the F 015, because everything is controlled via touchscreens which also recognize hand gestures. The driver can take control of the car at any moment via a rectangular steering wheel that extends from the dashboard.
Power comes from a hydrogen fuel cell or even plug-in rechargeable batteries, the electric motor making about 268 hp and 294 lb-ft (398 Nm) of torque. Zero to 62 mph (100 km/h) is done in 6.7 seconds and it will keep going up to 124 mph (200 km/h).
Not very impressive for some, but Mercedes says this could offer a total range of 684 miles (1,000 km), thanks to the car’s teardrop shape, light construction and narrow wheels mounted right on the corners of the car to allow great maneuverability and more passenger space.
Oh, and we also spotted another neat thing you’ll see in the photos bellow; the rear center brake light is basically a QR code. We didn't have time to scan it, but it should take you to a Mercedes-Benz landing page to inform you about the concept’s capabilities and such.
