The whole Dieselgate scandal and the bans on diesel engines promised by several cities or even countries over the next decares appear to have awakened the giant as the so-called traditional car manufacturers have begun pouring one electric model after another.
In all honesty, most of them are just concepts at this stage, but try to think back to the last Mercedes-Benz concept that was powered by an atmospheric engine, and you'll have to squeeze your memory really hard. And the Stuttgart-based giant is not the only example.
It is, however, the one we're going to focus on right now, and that's because Mercedes-Benz has just published the list of the vehicles it will bring to next month's Frankfurt Motor Show. Sadly, no production-ready electric vehicles yet, but there will be no fewer than two electric concepts.
One of them is the Vision Mercedes-Maybach 6 Cabriolet which will make its European debut. As gorgeous as the car is, you will understand if we show very little interest in it since its chances of making it into production - even with a conventional engine (God knows there's plenty of room under the hood) - are next to none.
The second, however, is the rumored Mercedes-Benz EQ compact-sized electric vehicle, which now gets the official confirmation. Unlike Audi, which is developing two electric SUVs under its e-tron brand, Mercedes-Benz has decided to opt for a smaller second model after the SUV previewed by the Generation EQ concept last year.
The question now, apart from 'when will Mercedes-Benz actually build the car?' is whether the Germans will manage to keep its price low enough to compete with Tesla's Model 3. They will be roughly the same size, but the likely hatchback shape of the Mercedes-Benz car would make it more suitable for the European market.
The electric concept will be one of the few surprises at the Mercedes-Benz stand, together of course with the Mercedes-AMG Project ONE Formula One-inspired hypercar. The company has kept the lid on any useful information regarding the two, so we have no idea what's in store for us.
A rendering we showed you last year (pictured here as well) drew heavily from the Generation EQ electric SUV concept, and it's likely the real model will do the same. If it does, that would signal Mercedes-Benz has settled on a design language for its EQ sub-brand, meaning it is indeed nearing the production phase. More should be revealed on September 12, when the press days at this year's Frankfurt Motor Show start.
