Mercedes-Benz E 250 CDI Cabrio vs Audi A5 3.0 TDI Cabrio by Auto Express

In one of their most peculiar choices for a comparison, the Auto Express peeps decided to pit the newly-launched E250 CDI Cabriolet facelift against the Audi A5 Cabrio sporting the three-liter diesel and quattro all-wheel drive.

The main idea behind the test was apparently the fact that both cars are luxury four-seat convertibles with similar size and price bracket (the tested E250 Cabrio is cheaper by about 1,000 pounds than the Audi).

Despite the power disadvantage caused by the missing two cylinders and almost an entire liter of engine displacement, the E-Class Cabrio irrevocably won the comparison.

The extensive facelift received by the E-Class helped it more than expected, although the most lauded features were ones the non-facelift model was also having. The innovative AirCap windshield air deflector and automatic rear wind stopper provide a turbulence-free ride with the top down, while the better balanced suspension and more communicative steering also make the less powerful Mercedes more enjoyable to drive.

All in all, the main blow to the Audi competition comes from the lower price and running costs of the E250 CDI Cabrio, swinging the balance almost entirely in its favor. You can read the entire comparison review here.
