As obsessed about cars as we are, it’s easy to forget that most of the designers working for carmaking companies aren’t necessarily “car designers” but simply “designers.”
In fact, most designers will tell you they actually enjoy this kind of break from their usual routine and regard it as a way to stretch their legs. Or, rather, their creative muscles.

That means they can use their skills to design pretty much anything, from simple everyday objects to cars, boats and, yes, why not, even houses. Wait, aren’t those guys called “architects”? Yes, they are, but we were talking about interior decorations.

One of the latest examples is Mercedes-Benz’s foray into the real estate business in cooperation with the Frasers Hospitality Group, a leading international provider of luxury serviced apartments. The two companies are joined in a pilot project that will see Mercedes-Benz designers spread some of the luxury the Stuttgart brand is renowned for over a series of rental apartments throughout the world.

The first such location will be opened in London this autumn and will be composed of six 100 square meter apartments located in Kensington. They feature a fully-equipped kitchen with a dining area, living room, and two bedrooms. Next year, nine more apartments will follow, this time in Singapore.

Mercedes-Benz has just released a video with the London apartments, which sets the mood for what is to be expected there. Situated in a nice neighborhood with low-rise buildings and lots of green spaces, the apartments offer those familiarized with the luxury and comfort of an S-Class a similar experience once they step out of their vehicle and into their temporary home.

The clip makes sure we get that idea via a quick transition between the car’s body lines and those of the custom made furniture inside the apartment. We also get a pretty good look at what the interiors are going to look like, but we have to say that, apart from that creased shiny black wall, we’re not that impressed. Have a look for yourself here:
